Popular Unity Party (Portugal)

Partido de Unidade Popular, PUP

One of the many far-left parties that popped up like mushrooms right after the revolution of April 25, 1974 in Portugal was called Partido de Unidade Popular (Popular Unity Party). This party had a symbol that contained a flag, plus a spike and a section of cogwheel, joining together in a red star. This can be seen in a reproduction of a propaganda poster issued in 1975. As you may see, the flag is red (of course!), has proportions close to 4:5 and contains the name of the party, in black capitals aligned to the hoist side.This is, of course, a flagoid. I have no idea if it had any connection with the true flag of the party, or even if the party had a flag in the first place.
This was a very short-lived party. It was created as a split of the PCP(M-L) (Portuguese Communist Party (Marxist-Leninist), not to be confused with the Portuguese Communist Party) and became legal in February 1975, only to be absorbed by the Democratic People’s Union (UDP) in 1976.
